[RootedCon] Internet of Things: Battle of the Bots
Presented at RootedCon, March 2018, Madrid, Spain.
In late 2016 an anonymous user posted on an hacking forum
the source code of an IoT based botnet, named Mirai.
A year and a half later, the released code has been adapted
and modified by multiple authors, creating a myriad of copycats and generating
some of the biggest botnet attacks in history.
The talk will be focused on why and how it was possible,
starting with an overview of the initial attacks, continuing with the evolution
of Mirai-based IoT botnets compared to the original released source code.
Finally, the presentation will end with an overview of the situation of these
botnets based on the data we collected.
