Arbitrary Code Execution Vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer
2005.November.22

Fortinet advises that its FortiGate security appliances protect against the latest Microsoft Internet Explorer "window()" Arbitrary Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2005-1790), a critical vulnerability that has been identified in Microsoft Internet Explorer, which could be exploited by remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands. A reclassification for the Microsoft Internet Explorer JavaScript Window() DoS vulnerability originally reported on 5/31/2005, it now indicates that the vulnerability can be exploited by malicious attackers to compromise a user's system.

Internet Explorer can not handle specially crafted calls to JavaScript "window()" objects and "body onload" tags. So leveraging this vulnerability, a malicious attacker could construct an HTML page that when viewed by a user could cause the execution of the arbitrary code.

To protect against Microsoft Internet Explorer "window()" Arbitrary Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2005-1790), Fortinet created an intrusion prevention signature that covers the vulnerability. A description for Fortinet's intrusion prevention signature is as follows:
