FortiGuard Advisory (FGA-2005-13)

BrepiBot.D Sony DRM Trojan Threat
2005.November.10

Fortinet advises that its FortiGate security appliances, FortiMail secure messaging appliances and FortiClient Host Security software protect against the latest Sony DRM vulnerability, W32/BrepiBot.D!tr.

W32/BrepiBot.D!tr is a Trojan that attempts to make use of the security flaws introduced in Sony's customer's systems by way of its DRM technology by installing a bot, which tries to connect to a list of IRC servers that are currently unreachable. The Trojan both drops a file and launches a program beginning by the five characters $sys$.

Now, Sony's DRM rootkit (installed on Sony's customers computers whenever inserting certain Music CDs in the CD drive) would hide to users all files and processes which names start by $sys$. This Trojan therefore attempts to make use of the security flaws introduced in Sony's customers systems by their DRM. However, some companies report that if the DRM is present in the system, the Trojan actually fails to execute properly.
