FortiGuard Advisory (FGA-2005-11)

Mitglieder.FY, Mitglieder.FZ and Mitglieder.GA Trojan Threats
2005.November.01

Fortinet advises that its FortiGate security appliances, FortiMail antispam appliances and FortiClient Host Security software protect against the latest Mitglieder variants, including W32/Mitglieder.FY!tr, W32/Mitglieder.FZ!tr and W32/Mitglieder.GA!tr.

W32/Mitglieder.FZ!tr is a Downloader type Trojan that is manually sent by hackers and/or mail proxies established by other viruses and Trojans, which attempts to connect to various Web sites to retrieve a Web hosted binary. As of yet, there are no binaries available for W32/Mitglieder.FZ!tr to download. However, unless the Trojan is removed from the compromised system, it could eventually locate a binary from one of the Web sites and then download and execute a file with unknown results. For further information on W32/Mitglieder.FZ!tr, please visit Fortinet's Virus Encyclopedia at:

W32/Mitglieder.FY!tr is similar to W32/Mitglieder.FZ!tr, differing in that it is currently not as prevalent, and uses differing Web site lookups to download its binary. Its size is 13,312 bytes. For further information on W32/Mitglieder.FY!tr, please visit Fortinet's Virus Encyclopedia at:

W32/Mitglieder.GA!tr is similar to W32/Mitglieder.FZ!tr, differing in that it is currently not as prevalent, and uses differing Web site lookups to download its binary. Its size is 10,752 bytes. For further information on W32/Mitglieder.GA!tr, please visit Fortinet's Virus Encyclopedia at:

The latest Mitglieder Downloader type Trojans are affecting users in the US and European regions and Fortinet rates W32/Mitglieder.FZ!tr as "Level Four" and the other two at "Level Two" threats. To protect against W32/Mitglieder.FY!tr, W32/Mitglieder.FZ!tr and W32/Mitglieder.GA!tr, Fortinet advises administrators to enable scanning of attachments which may attempt to filter through SMTP, POP3 and IMAP services.
